DAWLISH Town Crier Bob Graham is officially one of the best.

He romped home with the Best Crier during round two of this year’s prestigious Armada Cup competition.

Bob, with his wife Heather, represented Dawlish at the three day event, held in Kingsbridge, Plymouth and Dartmouth.

A spokesman for Dawlish Town Council said: ‘We are thrilled our very own Town Crier, Bob Graham, ably supported by his wife and consort Heather, won the 'Best Crier' accolade during round two of the recent Armada Cup hosted by Kingsbridge Town Council.

‘Bob’s dedicated, enthusiasm and unwavering community spirit continue to make us proud.

‘Thank you Bob and Heather for representing Dawlish so wonderfully.

‘We would also like to extend our thanks to Plymouth City Council and Dartmouth Town Council for their warm hospitality and excellent events during rounds one and three.

‘Your kindness and community welcome made each visit truly memorable.’

The International Town Crier Competition saw 24 town criers and their consorts take part.

They were competing for the Peter Randall Memorial Cup which is the third found of the Sir Francis Drake Armada Cup.

The Dartmouth round saw a procession from Bayards Cove along the Embankment to Royal Avenue Gardens.

Appointed by Dawlish Town Council, Bob’s role is as an official ambassador for Dawlish, promoting the town, welcoming visitors, and supporting local life.

He is a member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers which maintains the traditions and standards of town crying.

Previous town crier Stephen Cunliffe held the position from 1979 to 2024.

Anyone wanting to have a go themselves can enter the Dawlish Town Crier Competition which takes place on Sunday August 10 on The Lawn as part of Dawlish Celebrates Carnival.
