RESIDENTS of Newton Abbot came to gather for this year’s Remembrance Day event.

The parade, led by the Plymouth Maritime Corps of Drums and a detachment from Devonport-based submarine HMS Triumph, made its way to the town’s War Memorial through the town.

Piper Martyn Graves played the Lament while the service and prayers were taken by Rev Bruce Porter, branch padre of the Royal British Legion, and RAF AC Gareth Regan.

Wreaths were laid by many organisations and Mayor of Newton Abbot Cllr Carol Bunday.

Three students from Newton Abbot College read the names inscribed on the Newton Abbot War Memorial.

President of Newton Abbot RBL and councillor Mike Joyce said the whole event was ‘brilliant’.

He said: ‘We had a good turn out, the band led us through the parade from Courtenay Road to the War Memorial and we had a lovely service there. I was really impressed by the number of people who came along. Newton Abbot Town Council and its staff must be praised for all their work behind the scenes organising the event.

‘There is so much goes on to put this together and the War Memorial looked lovely.’

Chairman of Newton Abbot RLB Richard Underhill said: ‘It was an absolutely fantastic day and as chairman, I was very pleased with the turn out.

‘It was particularly nice to see so many young people there.’

Organisations involved in the event included scouts, guides, youth groups and Army, Royal Air Force and police cadets.
