STREET food and crafts are set to feature high on the list of attractions when the Newton Abbot Christmas lights are switched later this month.

The date for the diary is Saturday November 22 with the action due to start at 12 noon.

Live music and street entertainment will provide the backdrop to a bustling scene where stalls are expected to fill the top of Courtenay Street, offering a multitude of handmade and unique gifts as well as freshly cooked delights such as jerk chicken, wraps, churros and pizza.

Making a welcome return will be the free face painter and balloon modeller, together with free art activities from Creative Newton Abbot.

Watch out for giant stilt-walkers, enjoy performances from the Taiko Drummers and pop in to St Leonard’s Clock Tower where Santa’s Grotto will be open for fireside selfies.

The big man himself will arrive in a procession set to include a fire engine manned by members of the Newton Abbot crew, a vintage car plus the spectacular Ipplepen Carnival Float.

The big switch-on will be at 5.30pm, conducted by Father Christmas with help from the Town Crier, Mrs Christmas, Mayor Cllr Colin Parker and his wife Jean.

‘It’s a day we really love to organise and we know is popular with families,’ said Natalie Hicks, Events Co-ordinator at Newton Abbot Town Council.

‘Once again, we’ve made all of the entertainments and activities free of charge so that hopefully people can just soak up the atmosphere without worrying about the cost.

‘This is something the town council really cares about and attracting a big audience also means that our shops and businesses can make the most of the day so look out for any special seasonal offers they might have.’

The next family-friendly event in the town’s Christmas calendar will be the Victorian Evening on Wednesday December 3 with stalls raising funds for good causes.
