WINNER of eight Oscars, ‘On the Waterfront’ is the next offering from the Teignmouth Film Society in Dawlish.

It is billed as ‘American classic that broke the mould’ and will be screened at the Shaftesbury Theatre, Dawlish, on February 17.

Hilary Olek, Teignmouth Film Society Film Booker, says: ‘Times may have changed, but the dilemma of the whistle-blower who has to decide whether to call out corruption has not.

‘Marlon Brando is Terry Malloy, an ex-boxer who gets entangled with corrupt union bosses who run the New Jersey docks.

‘Brando’s acting was a breath of fresh air in a world of matinee idols – quirky, raw, passionate.

‘Terry acts tough, but his pain and his capacity for tenderness shine through – above all in the scenes with his brother (Rod Steiger) and Eve-Marie Saint (the sister of a man Terry unwittingly lures to his death).

‘A seminal film that, among numerous others, won no less than eight Academy Awards!;

Doors open from 7pm and the film begins at 8pm (running time: 1 hour 48 minutes). Entry is £5 at the door with free parking (from 6pm) on-street or round the corner in Barton Hill Car Park, Barton Hill, Dawlish EX7 9QF.
