BEACHGOERS heading to the coast to cool off during the warm weather are being urged to take extra care, with lifeguards on duty across South Devon.
RNLI lifeguards are patrolling Teignmouth, Dawlish Warren and Exmouth beaches every day from 10am to 6pm, providing safety advice and responding to emergencies along the shoreline.
The RNLI is reminding visitors to swim only between the red and yellow flags, check tide times before visiting the coast and always follow the advice of lifeguards on duty.
While many people are tempted to enter the sea, rivers or lakes to escape the heat, the charity warns that water can still be dangerously cold, even in warm weather.
Sudden immersion can lead to cold water shock, causing involuntary gasping, rapid breathing and a raised heart rate.
The RNLI says water below 15 degrees Celsius can trigger cold water shock at any time of year.
If someone gets into difficulty, the RNLI’s ‘Float to Live’ guidance advises tilting the head back with ears submerged, relaxing and controlling breathing, and using the hands to stay afloat if needed.
Once breathing is under control, swimmers should call for help or swim to safety where possible.
In an emergency at the coast, the public should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
