FIREFIGHTERS from Bovey Tracey were among several crews called to Woodbury Common this morning, Friday, March 6, to tackle a gorse fire spanning 100 metres.

The fire was first reported to Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service’s control room just after 5.30am.

Crew from as many as eight stations - Bovey Tracey, Danes Castle, Exmouth, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Middlemoor, Sidmouth and Torquay - were mobilised.

The gorse fire spanned around 100 metres, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have said.

Crews used six hose reel jets, foam jets and beaters to extinguish the fire, which was brought under control by around 8am.

‘This was an area approx 200 metres x 50 metres on fire and the cause was accidental’, a spokesperson for Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.
