A PEDESTRIAN walkway in Bovey Tracey that has ‘reached the end of its serviceable life’ is set to be replaced as Listed Building Consent (LBC) has been granted by planners.
The application, reference 25/01238/LBC, sought permission to demolish and replace the steel walkway along the side of the Grade II listed Bovey Bridge.
Submitted by Devon County Council (DCC), the application also includes the construction of new supports in the leat.
According to the heritage statement for 25/01238/LBC, the walkway has ‘reached the end of its serviceable life and requires replacement’.
And, thankfully, Teignbridge District Council (TDC) have this week granted LBC, subject to several conditions, including that the demolition of the breakwater must be carried by handheld tools.
Located to the southwest of the town centre, Bovey Bridge, a two-lane carriageway across the River Bovey, provides the main link for vehicles and pedestrians between the east and west sides of Bovey Tracey.
The original structure was built in the 17th century.
The stone masonry was widened around 1850, with the walkway being built in the 1900s.
