AN upcoming festival celebrating homegrown produce has been cancelled due to the recent heatwaves.

‘GrowFest’, an event whereby resdients would have brought their surplus vegetables, fruit and flowers to bear in Newton Abbot town centre for sale, was cancelled this week.

On Monday, August 22, Newton Abbot Town Council announced the event, which was billed for September 17 and was to be a first for the town, was cancelled due to the successive heatwaves scuppering their plans

Newton Abbot Town Council, via their Twitter page, said: ‘We have all enjoyed the lovely heatwave this August but unfortunately this seasonal weather has played havoc for local produce growers and crops.

‘This means with a heavy heart we will be cancelling this event for 2022.’

‘GrowFest’ would have been an opportunity for locals to sell excess vegetables, fruit and or flowers from one of the town centre wheelbarrows: the event would also have featured activities for children, live music and a chance to win a £50 garden voucher for the best dressed wheelbarrow.

It should be noted that the museum will be still hosting some Lego-based activities around the Clock Tower on September 17 from 10am to 1pm.
