A BOVEY Tracey care home could undergo a major programme of improvements aimed at creating more bedrooms, better communal spaces and easier access for residents.

Plans have been submitted to Teignbridge Council for Tracey House Retirement Home, with the proposals designed to bring more of the existing building complex into use as part of the care home.

The scheme would provide additional ensuite bedrooms and improve communal facilities, while creating clearer links between the north wing, central wing, main house and bungalow.

Improved accessibility is also at the heart of the proposals, with plans for passenger lifts, gentle ramps and sheltered routes around the site.

Fire safety would be strengthened through protected stairways and lobbies, alongside more coherent escape routes.

Residents could also benefit from improved access to the home's gardens, including private terraces and communal outdoor dining areas.

The proposals would keep any new external additions modest, with the design and materials intended to complement the existing buildings.

Tracey House closed in April 2023, before a subsequent planning application sought permission to change the property's use to holiday accommodation.

That application was refused, and an appeal against the decision was dismissed in September 2025.

The home has since reopened and is currently operating as a care home.

According to the application's design and access statement, the latest plans are intended to ‘support that operation’ by making better use of the existing complex and investing in its long-term future.

The statement continues: ‘Tracey House is open and operating as a residential care home.

‘The proposal represents a positive investment in this valued local service by allowing more of the existing complex to become functional and be brought into active care use.

‘It responds directly to the previous planning history by supporting the community use and adapting the buildings for modern care needs’.

Teignbridge Council is expected to make a decision by no later than November 16.
