AND just when you thought that things couldn't get any worse, you find out that Ashburton Road will be under traffic lights from next month and into 2026.

The Mid-Devon Advertiser can confirm that from November 3, multi-way, temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A383 while Power On Water carry out ‘essential utility works’ from the Barton Drive junction to the new site entrance adjacent to Howton Lane.

The work, which is expected to last until April 10, 2026, involve the excavation of the footway and carriageway to install a new 315mm water main.

A spokesperson for Power On Water said: ‘We have agreed permit conditions and traffic management arrangements with the local authority to minimise disruption, although some delays may occur during peak times.

‘Power On thanks residents and road users in advance for their patience and cooperation while we complete this essential infrastructure improvement’.

It beggars belief that such work was approved while the A382, another key road in and out of Newton Abbot, is closed, especially as the A383 is signposted as the official diversion for the A382 closure.

The Mid-Devon Advertiser has approached Devon County Council for comment.
