POLICE in Teignmouth and Dawlish are warning motorists take care in this morning’s weather after reports of four road collisions in just half an hour.

Officers said: ‘In 30 minutes we have now had four road traffic collisions come in due the ice.

‘Please be careful on the roads today as there is a lot of black ice around.

‘If you hit a patch of black ice, don’t panic.

‘Keep the steering wheel straight and maintain your speed and don’t hit the brakes.

‘Use the gears to slow down if necessary, but avoid any sudden movements that could destabilise the car. ‘Stay safe out there.’

Firefighters in Newton Abbot have warned drivers to take more care.

They said as temperatures have dropped last night and are due to remain low for a few days, motorists should allow extra time for driving in snow and ice conditions.

They also advise taking time to ensure vehicles are clear before driving and only travel if necessary.
A fire service spokesman said: ‘Slow your speed as stopping distances can increase ten-fold when there is ice around.

‘Take time to clear your windscreen.

‘The Highway Code says you must be able to see out of every glass panel in your vehicle.’
