R.Spencer reviews Babbacombe Theatre’s SuperStars

IT’S been a long time in the waiting but the lights are back on at Babbacombe Theatre and well and truly shining on the cast of SuperStars.

The show is the very definition of a traditional summer variety show that offers something for everyone’s tastes.

SuperStars is a laugh a minute right from the moment the curtain goes goes up. We were taken on a madcap journey through song, dance and the comedy stylings the latter of which is take care of by Steve Laister who once more offers a superlative masterclass in comic-timing. His take on Dolly Parton’s Working Nine to Five with has to be seen to be believed. I’ll just leave that there.

Venue favourites Wayne Martin and Paul Cobley both make a welcome return to the boards and their love of performing is obvious whilst they are on stage.

This year also sees Sami-Jane Slater, Josie Gould and Lindsey Collard return, and they perform with their heart and soul.

Special mention must be given to the Kute Kidz, four teams of three very talented youngsters who are already sharing their dreams of future stardom.

For our performance we had the Blue team which comprised Natalia, Lola and Lacey. The way the trio sang A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman means they certainly have shining stage careers a head of them.

A riot of dazzling dancing colours was provided by the six very talented and beautiful members of Danze Chique. Their costumes provided a cornucopia of colour as they took to the stage enthralling all with their dance moves.

Although Covid restrictions lifted the theatre does request you to wear a facemask while moving between the entrance and your seat, or during the interval - although it is not compulsory, a little common sense and common courtesy doesn’t hurt, does it?
