BUSINESSMAN David Austin represented Newton Abbot at a reception held by King Charles marking the contribution of small businesses.

David, chairman of Austins department store, was one of a number of business owners invited to attend the event held at Buckingham Palace.

The event was organised to recognise the part small businesses, including retailers, play in the economy nationwide and those invited to attend were nominated by the British Independent Retailer Association.

David, the third generation of the family to run the popular store, said: ‘It was a great honour and privilege to represent Austins to recognise and acknowledge the contribution of small businesses to the economy. It was wonderful to be able to represent our third generation business, our 100 staff and Newton Abbot.

‘The day itself was fantastic, we had a reception at Buckingham Palace in the state dining room.’

David had the chance to speak to the King and tell him about the business.

He said: ‘I found the King to be very personable and engaging and you feel he fully talks to you which is a remarkable quality. It was extraordinary and I felt privileged to have been able to meet him.

‘I was able to explain how, as a store, we are like a small John Lewis in a small town but with an important role to play and we regard ourselves as a key part of the community.

‘The King seemed very interested and he talked about the importance of small businesses which have great ideas.’

David said the invitation reflected the ‘collective achievements’ of everyone involved in Austins since it opened 98 years ago.

Invitations were sent out before the death of The Queen but King Charles is known for his support of local businesses, their history and the effect they have in helping the economy.

Other members of the Royal Family in attendance included the Duke of Gloucester and Prince Edward.
