Work has started week on the construction of a new £95k pump track at Millstream Meadow in Chudleigh.
The track will provide cyclists of all ages and experience with an exciting safe route to exercise their skills.
It will be in the area between the existing skate park and the outdoor gym and play park. The build time will be around six weeks.
Chudleigh mayor, Cllr Martin Tinkler, said: ‘I’m really excited about this track. It nicely completes the facilities for play, sport and recreation at Millstream Meadow providing facilities for everyone from toddlers to adults.
‘Whilst the skate park is very good it is really most suitable for small-wheeled sports.
‘The pump track gives cyclists a facility that will serve all from beginners to the most experienced. For those new or inexperienced in riding the track will provide a safe place where they can improve their confidence and increase their riding skills. At the same time the track is challenging enough to provide entertainment for experienced riders.’
The main section of track is approximately 180m long, with a second, oval track to the side which will suit the less-skilled rider.
Kye Forte, the owner of Forte Trailscapes, has been chosen as the contractor to build the pump track.
He said: ‘Using our many years of experience the track has been designed to make the most of the space adjacent to the play park and concrete skatepark, catering to all abilities, while challenging experienced riders and being safe for beginners.
‘Our aim is to produce an interesting track with a variety of options & riding directions. The pump track will be surfaced with a specialist asphalt ensuring it is usable for bikes, boards and scooters.
‘The sides of the jumps will be surfaced with Agri-flex rubber crumb and the backs of the banked corners will be laid with lawn turf.’
The £95,000 project has been primarily paid for from Section 106 funding that was provided specifically for sports infrastructure.
The main chunk of those funds emanated from the Rivendell development. The final chunk of funding has been provided by British Cycling following a successful application for £16,000 to the Places To Ride programme.
Delivered through a unique partnership between British Cycling, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and Sport England, the Places to Ride programme has made £15 million available to ensure a lasting legacy in England from the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.
