POLICE have addressed community concerns in Newton Abbot following the release of a man from prison.
The statement by Devon and Cornwall Police reads: ‘We are aware of community concerns regarding a male who has recently been released from prison and is now residing in the local area.
‘We understand that news of this nature can cause anxiety, particularly for parents and carers.
‘Please be assured that both local schools and your neighbourhood policing team are fully aware of the situation and are working closely together to ensure appropriate safeguarding measures are in place.
‘We continually assess information and intelligence to maintain the safety of our community.
‘We have had information recently reported to us and want to reassure the public that we are actively pursuing all appropriate lines of enquiry.
‘Any information shared with police is carefully assessed and investigated where necessary.
‘We encourage anyone with concerns or relevant information to continue reporting so that risk-based reviews can be conducted.
‘We would also like to remind the community that posting information or concerns on social media does not constitute reporting it to police.
‘If you have concerns or information, it must be reported directly to us via the appropriate options given below.
‘It is important to recognise that when individuals are released from custody, there is a structured legal process in place to support their reintegration into the community.
‘This process includes supervision, monitoring, and strict conditions where applicable.
‘These arrangements are designed to manage risk and promote community safety.
‘We would also take this opportunity to remind parents and carers of the important role they play in reinforcing “stay safe” principles with their children.
• Staying in groups where possible;
• Being aware of their surroundings;
• Not engaging with strangers;
• Trusting their instincts;
• Reporting anything that makes them feel uncomfortable
‘If you witness any suspicious behaviour or have information that causes concern, please report it to us immediately via 999 in an emergency, 101 non-emergency and online reporting using the devon and Cornwall website.
‘Community safety is a shared responsibility.
‘By remaining vigilant, maintaining open conversations at home, and reporting concerns promptly, we can continue to work together to keep our area safe and supportive for everyone’.
