POLICE in Newton Abbot have taken steps to remove a beggar from the town centre this afternoon.
Officers have issued another Community Protection Warning, working in partnership with South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership, to remove the ‘well known’ street beggar for two years.
A spokesman for Newton Abbot police said: ‘As the police we will always assist those who genuinely need help and support.
‘This is because we have such a great working partnership with those that can make a difference, we have many success stories to back this up.
‘What we will not tolerate is anti-social behaviour, this is just another example of our zero tolerance approach.
‘The beggar who was issued the warning today has a home elsewhere along with an income, he persistently caused anxiety, alarm and distress to the community and mislead the public by displaying various signs.’
