AS Newton Abbot comes to terms with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the town council has outlined what will be happening over the next few days.

While the funeral, following royal protocols is likely to be in ten days’ time, the following will be implemented in the interim:

  • A book of condolences is available to the public at Newtons Place in Wolborough Street.
  • Teignbridge District Council will also have a book of condolences available at Forde House
  • The flag on the tower will be lowered to half mast, but raised to full mast at 11am today and lowered again at 1pm, where it will remain until the two days after the funeral.
  • Today there will be a single toll of the bell at the Clock Tower, for each year of Queen Elizabeth’s life.
  • There will be a proclamation at St Leonards Tower. This is likely to be on Monday 12th September at 2pm but full details will be on the NATC website.
  • Town Council events are cancelled for the next 12 days as a mark of respect to Her Majesty.
  • This means that the Town Criers Competition planned for tomorrow and the ‘Make and Create’ event will not take place.
  • The designated place for the laying of flowers is Golden Lion Square in Bank Street; the performance area under the white canopy, should be used where possible, thus making sure there is still access to the benches on the square.
  • Newton Abbot Town Council would appreciate if flowers are free from any plastic or cellophane wrappings, as the flowers at the end of the period of mourning will be mulched.
