THE SECOND part of a new walking and cycling link has been opened between Ogwell and Newton Abbot.

Work started in May to extend the route from Bakers Park, through the hedgerow, across the driveway to Bradley Manor and on to Beverley Way.

The new 90-metre path makes it safer and easier to travel between Newton Abbot town centre and Ogwell. It gives people another choice instead of using Totnes Road and can help them feel more confident walking, wheeling or cycling for everyday journeys.

Teignbridge District Council and Devon County Council worked together to deliver this part of the project which is another step towards better walking and cycling routes for Newton Abbot and nearby areas.

The work included the new shared path, drainage, boundary improvements and landscaping.

Funding came from the Active Travel Fund, Devon County Council’s Local Transport Plan grant, Homes England funding and Section 106 developer contributions managed by Teignbridge District Council.

Now this part is finished, work will start to look at the next stage of the Ogwell Link.

This is expected to include a new crossing over Totnes Road and a better link between Beverley Way and Bunting Close.

Cllr Gary Taylor, Executive Member for Planning and Building Control, said: ‘The route is already popular with residents, and this extension makes access between Ogwell and the town centre even better.

‘A safe, traffic-free route helps families be more active, enjoy local green spaces and choose healthier, greener ways to travel. It also makes it easier for people to walk, wheel or cycle to school, work and town centre services.’

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity, said: ‘Improving walking and cycling routes is an important part of helping people make more sustainable choices for everyday journeys.

‘This new section of the Ogwell Link gives residents and visitors a safer and more enjoyable route while also supporting better access to local green spaces.’
