THE APPEARANCE of a 36m high observation wheel on Teignmouth seafront took many in the resort by surprise.

The wheel arrived late last week and is now in situ on The Den giving residents and visitors the chance to enjoy bird’s eye views of the area.

Featuring multiple enclosed gondolas and seating, the wheel will offer a panoramic look across Teignmouth and the surrounding coastline.

Similar wheels are features in many seaside towns and there was previously a version at Dawlish Warren.

Over the past week, the wheel, which has been organised by Teignbridge Council, was transported to the site in small sections, attracting considerable local interest among residents and visitors.

The observation wheel will be located adjacent to the footpath leading from the zebra crossing on Den Crescent to the Promenade, directly in front of the new Teignmouth Town Council public toilets.

The attraction, which opens this weekend, will be in place for a period of four weeks.

Cllr John Nutley, Executive Member for Leisure and Recreation said: ‘We’re very pleased to be able to host an observation wheel in Teignmouth.

‘We know how much people enjoy visiting the area, and having an attraction like this will enhance their experience and, we hope, encourage even more people to visit our beautiful coastal town.’

The council said all necessary requirements for the temporary installation of the wheel have been met, and nearby residents were informed in advance of the construction taking place.
