A NEW gym could be opening in Kingsteignton as an application to develop a former showroom in Pottery Road industrial estate is submitted to planners.

The application seeks to convert the former Swanson Motor Company building into an ‘industrial-style’ gym.

In addition to the gym, 25/00958/FUL includes provision for a bar/café, indoor and outdoor sports courts, including pickle-ball, as well as changing rooms, toilets and a sauna.

The determination deadline for Teignbridge District Council to make a decision on 25/00958/FUL is Augut 20.

The design and access statement for 25/00958/FUL says that the proposal will ‘enhance the offering of recreational facilities in Kingsteignton for local people, promoting a healthy sustainable community’.

The design will be of a ‘high quality throughout and have a positive contribution to the heritage asset’, the statement adds.

It will also create jobs in the town, as well as making Kingsteignton ‘a more attractive place for young families to settle’.

The application makes provision for 13 parking spaces, two of which will be accessible spaces.

As part of the conversion to a gym space, a modern heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system will be installed.

At present, the site comprises: the Clay Cellar building; a link building; garage, mechanics workshop and forecourt.

The Clay Cellars, a Grade II listed former industrial building, will house the gym; the adjacent building, which links it with the garage, will house the changing rooms, toilets and sauna.

The mechanics workshop will house the main entrance and reception, while the garage will house the indoor courts.

The forecourt will be made level for the outdoor courts.
