POLICE administered more than 10,000 breath tests last year, with over 1,000 in December alone, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has revealed.

A total of 10,775 tests were carried out by Devon & Cornwall Police in 2024, the FOI request shows.

Of the total number of tests administered, 1,404 returned a positive result, though the figure also includes the number of tests refused.

There were 1,353 roadside breath tests administered in December 2024.

The police can stop you at any time and ask you to take a breath test (‘breathalyse’ you) if: they think you’ve been drinking; you’ve committed a traffic offence or if you’ve been involved in a road traffic collision.
