A 28-year-old man has died in police custody in Torquay, prompting an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The man was arrested in Torquay in the early hours of January 15 and was taken to Torquay Custody Centre.

He became unwell while in a custody cell and was given emergency medical treatment before being taken to Torbay Hospital.

Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased.

The man’s next-of-kin have been informed.

Devon & Cornwall Police made a mandatory referral and is co-operating fully with the Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation.
