THERE is just over a week left to have your say on Newton Abbot Town Council’s plans for a new community building in the heart of the town.
Dubbed Newton’s Place II, the proposed new space, which promises to be a ‘dynamic, multi-use facility in the town centre’, will be home to a youth café and training hub, exhibition space, workspace for businesses and home to the town’s CCTV control centre.
And now the council is looking to gauge public opinion on its plans
The financial implications of acquiring these premises would involve raising the Council Tax for a Band D home by £5 p.a. to fund a loan from the Public Works Loan Board.
It equates to 42p per month or 9p per week.
Town Clerk for Newton Abbot Town Council said: ‘The Town Council responded to its citizens’ aspirations to have a community hub and larger Museum in the town centre by delivering Newton’s Place.
‘Its success is borne out by visitor numbers increasing from 2,500 p.a. in the former site at Devon Square to 15,000 p.a. in 2024.
‘There is now a unique opportunity to build upon that success by delivering phase II of the community hub by offering a large exhibition space that many of our local groups have told us is currently unavailable in the town.
‘Additionally, the Council wishes to deliver upon a Community Plan aspiration to provide facilities for young people.
‘This Phase II project will provide this along with a new home for the town’s CCTV control room, and business start-up space.’
The cost of fitting out the premises would be met from the Council’s own capital budget and grants.
