Val Ellicott, leader of her ‘Singing for Pleasure’ group at Teignmouth & District u3a was inspired by a recent message she saw on Facebook.

Carole Butler, Guest Services Assistant at the Cliffden Hotel in Teignmouth, was looking for a group to lead Christmas music for a community singalong, rather than a concert, in order to celebrate Christmas in the extensive grounds of the hotel, whilst using the opportunity to support a worthy local charity.

Val contacted Carole and the idea of a ‘dog friendly’ Christmas family singalong began to bear fruit. Val wanted to support the Alice Cross Centre, also based in Teignmouth, in recognition for all the good work they undertake in the community.

Julia Street, General Manager and Company Secretary of The Alice Cross Centre, was delighted at the prospect.

She commented: ‘Val and I both believed that there would be excellent synergy between u3a’s ethos and our own - it’s an ideal fit!’

Julia continued: ‘For over 70 years, The Alice Cross Centre has provided a lifeline of friendship, fun, learning & community involvement to the over 50s in Teignmouth and surrounding area. The last 18 months have shown more than ever how our work, in supporting socially isolated and potentially vulnerable people, is an essential charitable service in our community.’

Carole added: ‘The plan is to hold the event in the summer house within the grounds of the hotel on December 10 starting around 6.30 pm. Tickets will go on sale next month and there will also be posters placed around the town to publicise the event.

“The whole idea is to lay on a very informal family singalong by torchlight, around a bonfire, which we expect will create a very cosy atmosphere - guests will be encouraged to join in. Refreshments, including mulled wine and mince pies will complement the BBQ and licensed bar; a Christmas theme, which can only enhance the experience.’

Val concluded: ‘Until I met with Carole, I had not fully appreciated the extent of the hotel’s grounds. This should be a grand occasion leading up to Christmas - we want to create a happy informal atmosphere for families to enjoy, whilst recognising the excellent work of the Alice Cross Centre.’
