FAMILIES are being invited to step back in time as Dartmoor National Park Authority brings its popular History Hunters event to Britain’s Ocean City for a special day of free activities at The Box.

The family fun day will take place on Friday, July 24, from 10.30am until 3.30pm, offering children aged between five and 11 the chance to explore Dartmoor’s rich cultural heritage through a range of hands-on experiences.

Dartmoor National Park Authority is joining forces with The Box, Plymouth’s major museum and art gallery, to create a day packed with creative activities designed to inspire young explorers.

Visitors will be able to try their hand at crafts, make-and-take activities, archaeological excavation trays, clay pot shaping, wool spinning and medieval games.

There will also be a Victorian-style selfie station and many other interactive experiences aimed at bringing history to life in an engaging way.

Andy Bailey, Dartmoor National Park Authority’s Outreach and Engagement Officer, said the event would provide a new opportunity to connect children with Dartmoor’s heritage.

‘We are really looking forward to taking our History Hunters event to The Box for the first time’, he said.

‘It will give us a great opportunity to connect children to Dartmoor through creative activities, bringing them closer to cultural history and the natural world.

‘Teaming up with The Box, a vibrant treasure trove of art, collections and artefacts, makes it the perfect setting for a fun day of creativity’.

Beth Hart, Engagement Officer for families at The Box, said the venue was delighted to welcome the Dartmoor team.

‘The landscape and history of Dartmoor have and continue to fascinate people of all ages, so we’re delighted to be welcoming the National Park team to The Box for this special event’, she said.

‘It is going to be an inspiring day for everyone who comes along with plenty of hands-on activities – the perfect way to launch our summer holiday programme for families’.

Alongside the History Hunters activities, families can explore Dartmoor-related items in The Box’s Port of Plymouth gallery.

The displays include Bronze Age objects discovered during excavations at Whitehorse Hill in 2011, including items believed to have been buried with the cremated remains of a high-ranking woman.

The Box will also host additional Dartmoor-themed activities during the same week, with families invited to create Dartmoor-inspired clay pinch pots on Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23.

The sessions run from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm and are free drop-in activities.

The events form part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of Dartmoor becoming a National Park in 2026.

Throughout the year, Dartmoor National Park Authority is running a programme of activities, including ranger-led walks, talks and family events, to help people discover and enjoy the special qualities of the landscape.
