FIREFIGHTERS from Teignbridge were among those called to help tackle a large blaze on a cliff face near Oddicombe Beach in Torquay, which the fire service says was started deliberately.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident shortly after 9.30pm on Friday, July 24.

Fire engines from Torquay, Paignton, Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot were initially mobilised after reports of a fire on the cliff face.

On arrival, crews found the blaze to be much larger than first reported and requested further assistance.

Three additional fire engines and an off-road vehicle were sent to the scene as firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control.

The incident was brought to a close at around 12.50am on Saturday, July 25, after crews extinguished the fire using hose reel jets and beaters.

The fire involved a mixture of gorse, grass and trees.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said police also attended the incident as it is believed that the fire was started deliberately.
