FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot joined teams from eight other stations to fight a blaze at a car body workshop until the early hours of this morning (Saturday).

Fire Control reports: ‘We received a report of a Commercial car body workshop on fire at Ham.

‘Three fire engines and an Aerial Ladder Platform were all sent.

‘On arrival crews confirmed smoke was issuing from the building and requested another fire appliance. Approximately 10 minutes later a further assistance message was sent asking for a further two fire engines to assist with breathing apparatus.

‘We currently have eight fire engines, several specialist appliances and officers in attendance.

In a final update at 11.15pm, they reported: ‘This fire is now extinguished. It was a fire in an industrial paint booth.

‘The fire was caused by a motor over heating in the spray booth.

‘There was substantial damage to the industrial unit. In total there were eight fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, command support unit, an environmental protection unit and a welfare unit in attendance.’
