PLANS for a new four-screen cinema in Market Square, Newton Abbot , are due to go before the TDC planning committee soon, but before then let's see what you think.

The plans are part of the Future Highstreet Fund regeneration project, for a purpose-built, two-storey building. Hosting four screens on the upper level with ground-floor space to accommodate businesses such as restaurants and cafes, complimenting existing business and boosting the night-time economy. The aim is to enhance the square with additional planting and a communal space for local people and visitors.

Executive Member for Business, Cllr Nina Jefferies has previusly said: ‘Increasing footfall in the town and boosting economic prosperity is the primary aim of the regeneration plans.’

Libby and Erin Vincent, Dawlish: ‘It’ll bring more money and tourism to Newton Abbot. We live in Dawlish so it would be a really good option for us, we’d probably use it quite a bit.” Erin agreed ‘I love the cinema!’

However, these plans are in contention with an alternative option by the Community Benefit Society that wishes to keep the original Alexandra building as a mixed-use arts centre and community hub that would include comedy, music shows, family shows, community events and a busy film program.

These plans conflict with the current TDC four-screen proposal which would contrast aesthetically with the grade 2 listed building.

Although both proposals emphasise the importance of a communally used space and a flourishing cultural market quarter, aesthetics and functionality differ, dividing opinions over which of the plans should prevail.

Jo Hixon, Chudleigh, 'It’s sad if the old one goes but it sounds like it will be a positive change for the community on the whole. 'Newton Abbot needs it. 'We were just looking at the number of shops closing on the way through.’
