WITH celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee fast approaching, the members of Dawlish Town Council are hoping the event will, quite literally, go to everyone’s heads.

The authority has set a challenge for residents to create their own monarch-amusing crowns with prizes on offer for the most inventive and impressive. The ‘headdress with the mostest’ won’t necessarily have cost a fortune to make, nor will it have required the input of a team of master craftsmen. But it must scream ‘I’m the King or Queen of the Castle’ and have that certain something that puts it head and shoulders above the competition.

‘We really want people to let their imaginations run riot and to come up with some stunning crowns to be worn at our Jubilee Sunday family party on June 5,’ said mayor of Dawlish, Cllr Lisa Mayne.

‘Raid the cupboards and the kitchen drawer that’s always overflowing with bits and bobs, get the glue gun out, pinch a coat hanger from the wardrobe, dig out the feather boa - do whatever you have to do but make something fabulous that will make us smile. We want to see some right royal results at the party on June 5 with people looking truly regal in their home-made crowns. We are hoping it will be great fun and put a smile on people’s faces.’

Prizes will be awarded in three categories – under-fives, five-to-10 years and over-10s.

The judges will be led by Cllr Mayne with no strict criteria for their assessment.

The crowning glory will go to whoever entertains the judges the most or who impresses with their creativity but all entrants can take part in the Crown parade at 2.30pm on Sunday, June 5 on The Lawn. Look out for crown making workshops at Dawlish Library in late May.
