PLANS have been submitted to stabilise and partially rebuild a collapsed section of the historic boundary wall at an Exminster churchyard.

The application, reference 26/01186/FUL, has been submitted following the failure of part of the southern retaining boundary wall at St Martin’s church.

Investigations found the collapse was caused by groundwater pressure building up behind the sandstone structure, weakening the wall over time.

The proposed works include rebuilding around six to seven metres of the collapsed wall using existing sandstone, installing approximately 26 ground anchors to strengthen the remaining structure, and adding drainage holes to reduce future water pressure.

The churchyard remains in use for services and as a public footpath.

The proposals aim to protect the historic character of the site, while improving safety and structural stability.

A decision on the planning application is expected in late September.
