A CAMPAIGN has been launched to raise half a million pounds for repairs to a Teignmouth church tower.
The iconic bell tower at St Michael’s Church is a prominent feature of the town’s skyline.
But major work is needed to restore and stabilise the pinnacles of the bell tower and the window masonry which has been badly eroded by weather.
On top of this, following the Grade II listed church’s last inspection, other important building work is required to repair the fabric of the building and preserve if for future generations.
The total cost of these works are estimated to be in the region of £500,000.

No finding is available from the Church of England so paying for the restoration falls to the local church community.
The Parochial Church Council has limited resources and no money to fund the works.
This prompted the launch of the funding appeal.
Efforts are also being made to secure grant funding.
A special event was held at the church to launch the appeal.
Funeral director Oliver Knapman, Right Reverend Moira Astin, Bishop of Crediton and Lord Bishop of Exeter Right Reverend Dr Mike Harrison have been appointed trustees of the appeal.
Dr Harrison said: ‘I am delighted to have been asked to provide my blessing for the appeal.
‘St Michael’s was consecrated by one of my predecessors in 1823.
‘Whatever you can do to support this appeal will be a gift not just to Teignmouth today but also to future generations. I give the appeal my wholehearted support.’
The inspection has shown the bell tower’s Victorian iron braces have rusted and split the stonework, making it unsafe.
The Rose Window and blind balustrading on the first floor and windows of the ringing chamber on the second floor require repair.
The church clock needs work and redecoration of the clock face.
The tower’s pinnacles and parapet masonry is heavily eroded with open joints and fallen pieces of masonry on the tower roof.
