Beating Rising Energy Costs

With the cost of living and energy prices dominating the news throughout 2022, you’d think we would all be looking forward to the start of a new year.

However, with no current planned extension for the Energy Bills Support Scheme – the non-repayable discount supported by the government– and a less generous forecast for the Energy Price Guarantee started in April 2023, most UK homeowners are starting to look for alternative ways to fuel their homes.

Energy regulator, Ofgem, announced in late November that the Energy Price Guarantee price cap is set to rise to an annual level of £4,279 in January 2023. Although consumers will be protected, a typical household dual fuel direct debit will increase in April 2023 from £2,500 to £3000. T

homas Read, company director of Carbon Saving Group comments, ‘we’ve seen an uplift in enquiries and subsequent bookings for solar panels and air source heat pumps, people are generally fed-up with the lack of control they have over their home energy bills’.

Solar panel installations carried out by MCS certified companies can benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme earning from surplus electricity generated. Whilst, the Boiler Upgrade (BUS) scheme, provides an upfront grant of £5k towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump. Thomas Read concludes, ‘2023 is definitely the year to embrace renewable energy for the home’. For more information contact Carbon Saving Group at  http://www.carbonsavinggroup.com

Stoves
Stoves (TT)

Just over 6 months ago Jonathan & Clare from Markstone Granite at Lifton, embarked on a new venture with daughter Sophie and her partner Danny, by taking over Shields’s Stoves in Tavistock. They have re-branded the business under the new name ‘Tavistock Stoves & Fireplaces’ but still trade from the same premises at 4 Vigo bridge Road. Danny runs the business day to day, with Clare & Sophie helping out with office duties!

Since taking on the business, the stove industry has boomed due to the ‘cost of living crisis’, as their customers wish to avoid paying high electric and gas prices, so it has been an extremely busy time for them all! During this busy time, they have also re-vamped the showroom, adding new displays of not only woodburning and multi-fuel stoves, but gas and electric stoves too! Including a new ‘Cook Stove’ area with the latest cook stoves from 3 of their suppliers. These stoves not only provide an efficient way of heating your room, they also cook your tea, bake scones in the oven and boil a kettle on the hotplate!

Tavistock Stoves sell reputable stoves from British manufacturers such as Charnwood, from the Isle of Wight, Town & Country in Yorkshire, Chilli Penguin from North Wales and their Gas & Electric stoves are from Exeter based company Gazco & Stovax. Other manufacturers include the beautiful contemporary stoves from Contura and Charlton & Jenrick.

Pop into their showroom to browse the 30+ stoves they have on display, or alternatively if you require any fireside accessories, such as log baskets, coal skuttles and companion sets, or maintenance products such as rope, replacement glass or fire bricks, you will find they stock a large range of all of these products too…and more!
