AUSTINS has opened the doors to its brand-new menswear department in Newton Abbot – along with a new coffee bar for shoppers to enjoy.

The new section at 10 Courtenay Street, pictured, opened this week, following months of work to transform the building.

The soft launch gives customers their first chance to explore the new menswear department, which includes brands such as Barbour, Joules, Remus Uomo, Superdry, Levi’s, GANT and U.S. Polo Assn, as well as a dedicated suit section.

And for those looking for somewhere to sit down and relax, the new Quarter Coffee bar is also now open.

The new department is linked internally to the existing Austins store next door, creating a much larger space for the family-run business.

Staff spent Sunday carrying out the big move, with the Austins team describing it as ‘a fantastic team effort’ involving countless trips back and forth as stock was moved into the new store.

David Austin, the third generation of his family to run the business, said he was very proud to finally see the doors open after so much work behind the scenes.

The opening marks the latest chapter in the story of the building, which was once home to M&S before the store closed in 2014.

The property then remained empty for several years before being taken over by the Department for Work and Pensions in 2021, when it was converted into a temporary job centre.

Austins bought the property in 2022 but had to wait for the DWP lease to end before it could take possession.

The company finally moved into the building in November 2025.

Almost a year of restoration and renovation work has followed, with the finished result now open for shoppers.

An official event to celebrate the opening is expected to take place later this year, the Mid-Devon Advertiser understands.
