IT has been another busy week for the crew at Bovey Tracey Fire Station, with both appliances mobilised to a number of incidents across Devon, including a major incident in Exeter.

The station’s 4x4 Ranger and All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) attended several grass fires in the Exeter and Bridgwater areas, with firefighters working in difficult-to-access locations to tackle the outbreaks.

Tuesday, August 11 was particularly busy for the crew.

Their first call was to a reported fire in the open on the M5.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the fire was a controlled burn and began making their way back to the station.

They had not gone far, however, before being mobilised again - this time to a building fire in Tedburn St Mary.

Working alongside colleagues from Chagford Fire Station, the Bovey Tracey crew arrived to find the fire had already been extinguished.

Firefighters nevertheless remained at the scene to make sure there had been no hidden fire spread within the building.

A hose reel jet, thermal imaging camera and small tools were used to check the area before the crew were satisfied it was safe.

And once again, the journey home was interrupted.

The appliance was redirected to Totnes Fire Station to provide standby cover.

While at Totnes, the crew were mobilised to Exeter as part of a nine-pump relief operation.

They remained at the scene into the night, keeping watch over one of the fields involved in the earlier fire.

Firefighters used hose reel jets and water buckets to dampen down remaining hotspots.

With another spell of hot weather, the crew are urging everyone to remain vigilant.

Discarded cigarettes, disposable barbecues and glass are among the causes of grass fires, which firefighters are seeing increasingly often.

The station is reminding the public that taking extra care during hot and dry conditions can help reduce the risk.
