FIREFIGHTERS from Bovey Tracey Fire Station were mobilised to two significant grass fires on consecutive days as crews tackled large areas of burning vegetation.

On Friday, August 7, crews were called to a large grass fire in Exwick, Exeter, after an initial fire engine was sent to reports of the blaze.

Due to the volume of 999 calls and the size of the fire, a further pump was mobilised.

On arrival, crews found a large area of grassland well alight and fire spreading towards nearby domestic properties.

Additional resources were requested, with eight fire engines, specialist appliances and officers eventually attending, including firefighters from Bovey Tracey.

The following day, Saturday, August 8, Bovey Tracey crews were again mobilised – this time to a major grass fire at Puriton, near Bridgwater.

Multiple 999 calls were received at just after 5pm, with seven appliances attending.

The incident was sectorised, with crews using beaters and hose reel jets to prevent the fire spreading across approximately 16 acres of grassland.

A bin store and minibus were completely destroyed, while crews used specialist equipment, including all-terrain vehicles and a telehandler.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental.
