MYSTERY surrounds the disappearance of several of the iconic waterfowl of Dawlish.

Unconfirmed reports suggest a group of youths may have been responsible for ‘tormenting’ and ‘kicking to death’ three of the birds.

Dawlish Town Council, which is responsible for looking after the waterfowl on the Lawn, has confirmed that a cygnet, a goose and a large duck are missing.

Businesswoman Chrissie Marks, who owns a hair salon in the town, heard the report from a customer who claimed the birds were kicked to death.

Chrissie said: ‘It breaks my heart and I felt sick to the stomach when I heard.

‘This can’t go on. It’s cruel.’

The town council says it is aware of ‘unverified’ reports of possible violence against the waterfowl, potentially resulting in the loss of three birds.

A spokesman appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information.

She said: ‘We would urge people with any information on the possible incident to contact the town council by email [email protected] or telephone 01626 863388 so further investigations can take place.

‘At all times we ask everyone to remain vigilant so that we can care for our birds and if they see an incident occurring to ring the police at the time it is taking place.’

Their investigations into what happened are continuing and they are looking into any CCTV coverage.

She said the water was very high at the time but enquires are ongoing.
