AUTHOR and curator Hettie Judah’s appearance at a community event in Dawlish proved a sell-out.

The Good Space, the independent creative venue in the town, hosted the evening with Hettie, the author of How To Enter The Art World After, as part of her south west tour of what she called ‘After Sessions’.

Four local artists - Rosie Harbottle, Katie Cleminson, Jen Madden and Angels Rimmer - also took part, talking about their own current work.

More than 40 guests, the largest gathering the Good Space has hosted so far since opening, joined in the evening which organisers say proves that culture belongs everywhere - not just in cities.

Attendees travelled from as far as Plymouth and Wellington for the evening of conversation, creativity and Q&A with Judah, whose tour also included venues in Exeter, Ashburton, Newton Abbot and Bideford.

The evening sold out four days before the event.

Co-Founder of the Good Space Amy Beech said: ‘We weren't going to let the chance pass us by to bring something different and valuable to our community.’

The Good Space discovered Judah’s tour through an Instagram post and asked to host one of her ‘After Sessions’ — a talk and Q&A format designed for intimate venues.

Despite initial uncertainty about demand, the cofounders promoted the event through local notice boards, the town chamber, social media and by rallying the local creative community.

Fellow co-Founder Amy Walker said: ‘The 'Why Dawlish?' question comes up often.

'Nights like this are our answer. Spaces like ours don't only belong in cities — they belong everywhere, for every community.’

The Good Space is an independent creative venue in Dawlish, Devon, dedicated to bringing people together through co-working, workshops and community events.
