ROWCROFT Hospice is calling on supporters to take on a once-in-a-lifetime challenge by trekking 35km along China’s Great Wall, with participants set to raise funds for end-of-life care across South Devon.
The nine-day adventure, taking place from October 9 to 17, 2027, will see trekkers spend five days walking along one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, passing ancient watchtowers, mountain ridges and remote sections of the historic landmark.
The route, organised in partnership with Global Adventures, will take participants away from the busiest tourist areas, offering a more remote experience of the Wall’s scale and history.
Challengers will face steep climbs, thousands of stone steps and the demanding ascent of the “Heavenly Ladder” at Mutianyu.
As well as the trek itself, the itinerary includes time in Beijing, where participants will visit key cultural sites such as the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Tiananmen Square. The trip will conclude with a celebratory group dinner marking the completion of the challenge.
Rowcroft Hospice says the expedition is open to both experienced walkers and those taking on a major challenge for the first time, with full support provided throughout.
Molly Billingsley, Challenges Fundraiser at Rowcroft Hospice, said the trek offers participants the chance to achieve something extraordinary while supporting local families.
‘Whether you’re an experienced adventurer or taking on a challenge for the first time, this fully supported trek offers an amazing opportunity to push yourself while making a real difference for local families’, she said.
‘Every step taken will help us continue providing compassionate end-of-life care for people across South Devon.
‘We’ll be with you every step of the way, supporting you to make the most of this unforgettable adventure’.
Those interested in taking part can attend an online information evening on Thursday, July 9 from 6.30pm to 7.15pm.
The session will provide details of the itinerary, fundraising advice and an opportunity to meet other potential participants.
Spaces for the information evening are limited, and early registration is encouraged via Rowcroft Hospice’s website - www.rowcrofthospice.org.uk/greatwall
