POLICE have warned Newton Abbot parents to make sure their children are safe if they ride a scooter to school.
On the Facebook page the local police warn: ‘Scooters have become a popular method of transport for children travelling to and from school.
‘While these have many benefits to them such as regular exercise and time/cost savings for parents, they bring an increase in the risk of people getting injuries due to their use
They urge parents, before leaving home:
Check that the wheels do not stick
Ensure that the child can control the scooter speed with the break
Ensure the scooter is the correct size for the child – the handlebars should be approximately waist height.
When scooting:
Your child must always travel on the pavement, away from the kerb and never on the road when possible.
Consider the use of helmets for the child’s safety
Avoid the use of scooters in wet and icy conditions – particularly in low light
They add: ‘Children under the age of eight will have difficulty judging speed and distance, ensure they are always accompanied and don’t cross the road alone.
‘For those over the age of eight, be aware that all children develop at different speeds, it will be up to you to judge when they are ready to travel independently.
‘Remember – Your child’s safety is your responsibility.’
