THE most important club competition of the year – to decide who will be crowned men’s and ladies’ club champions – was held at Dainton Park Golf Club over the weekend of July 9 and 10.

Play took place under clear blue skies and very hot temperatures for the competing golfers to contend with.

Played over two days, the first round for both the men and ladies on the Saturday went out in handicap order. Both fields were made up of both new and long-standing members battling it out for the top spots.

Day two saw the field go out in reverse order with the leaders going out last.

A packed terrace on Sunday afternoon saw the leaders playing up the 18th in a closely fought contest in both the men’s and ladies’ competition.

Matt Millar was crowned men’s club champion, winning by 16 shots. Matt currently plays off a handicap of -4 and has been a member of the club for about eight years, having risen through the Dainton Park Junior Academy.

He is just back from the USA where he has achieved a scholarship, and is currently playing golf in America.

Julie Winsor is the ladies’ club champion 2022 after successfully defending her title for the third successive year – making it her 10th championship, winning by four shots.

The nett championships were won by Simon Tuckerman – shooting an overall score of four under after a fabulous net 66 second round – and Jax Sharples, six over par overall and winning on countback on the second round.

RESULTS: Men’s Gross Championship: 1 Matt Millar, 136; 2 Nathan Cotton, 152; 3 Nathan Brown, 153.
