NEWTON Abbot Spurs have won their last three outings in the SW Peninsula League, scoring 10 goals and conceding just once along the way.
They’ll go in search of a fourth victory on the bounce when they visit Middlezoy Rovers tomorrow. Spurs won this fixture away from home last year but lost at The Rec on their way to a strong second-placed finish.
Under new manager Connor Marshall, they now look to go that one step further and their early-season form is very promising indeed, the seven-goal haul against Axminster Town last weekend a particular highlight.
On the other hand, The Zoy are in 11th currently, winning two games and losing four to date. At The Ethan Berry Pavilion they are one for one, having been beaten 3-2 by Torrington AFC last month and then beating Ilminster Town by two goals to nil a couple of weeks ago, Finn Hansford striking either side of the break.
Elsewhere in the division, leaders Bovey Tracey AFC will be keen to one-up their local rivals as they themselves cross paths with Axminster next, taking on the Tigers at Chard Road.
Just as impressive as their transfer business has been the Moorlanders’ results and performances. They are one of only two teams in the league, along with second-placed Bridport FC, yet to lose a game and have dropped points just once.
Top vs bottom, 19 points vs zero, +23 goal difference vs -28. Everything points to another emphatic win for Bovey so they will have to carefully ward away any complacency.
Onto Teignmouth AFC now and the third of three South Devon teams in the Peninsula League are at home tomorrow, welcoming Cullompton Rangers to Coombe Valley.
The Teigns ended August and started September with victories but have lost twice since, shipping 12 goals, albeit against the leading duo.
Cully meanwhile are fifth, with five wins for six, thus presenting Liam Jones and co with another tough test in the early stages of this campaign.

In the Western League, five points separate Torpoint Athletic in second and Paulton Rovers in ninth which shouldn’t be too surprising given how many games are still to come.
At the heart of that tight group are Buckland Athletic, who this weekend make the journey to Somerset to cross paths with Shepton Mallet.
There have been a lot of positives for the beginning of Matt Cusack’s tenure but it has to be said that their squad is thin on the ground.
Things have gone from bad to worse on that front with the full extent of Jared Lewington’s injury being confirmed. The forward was stretchered off in his side’s 2-1 win over Bradford Town at Homers Heath.
The club took to social media yesterday, writing as follows: “Following a knee scan, Jared Lewington has suffered a tear to the meniscus and ACL rupture which awaits a surgery decision.”
They added, “We send our best wishes to Jared and will be supporting him throughout his recovery.”
This major blow for the club leaves Ryan Bush as the only senior striker on the books and there are other light areas too.
After that Bradford game, Cusack told the Mid-Devon Advertiser that they’ll “be in the market now to get another one or two recruits in,” stressing the importance of targeting the right player(s).
“We’re currently speaking to a central midfielder, maybe looking at another wide-man and possibly a forward after today, we’ll have to assess Jared and if he’s going to be longer term, then it’s a big ask just to have Bushy [Ryan Bush] up there all on his own, so yes, certainly those three areas.”
As more has now been revealed regarding Lewington, an addition to the frontline becomes highly probable.

Last but not least, to the second weekend of the new South Devon Football League season.
In the Premier Division, both Kingsteignton Athletic and Newton Abbot 66 will follow up last weekend’s cup action with league matches at home, hosting Waldon Athletic and Lakeside Athletic respectively.
Bovey Tracey 2nd XI and Buckland Athletic 2nd XI are both also at home, but in Division One, whilst Newton Spurs 3rd XI visit Brixham and WBB look to bounce back from their opening day defeat when they head to Paignton Villa.
