A ROAD closure in Newton Abbot is set to cause further disruption for motorists as work to install new electricity infrastructure linked to HMP Channings Wood gets under way.
Devon County Council has confirmed that Wolborough Street will be closed from October 26 to November 6 to allow high-voltage electricity ducts to be installed.
The closure will affect the stretch between the Asda junction and Steppes Meadow, near the entrance to Bakers Park.
The work is connected to the extension of HMP Channings Wood and will provide new electricity infrastructure.
The nearest substation with sufficient capacity to support the project is located in Bradley Lane.
The council said the timing had been chosen to coincide with the October half-term holiday in a bid to minimise disruption, with the work still on schedule to begin as planned.
As the closure affects the A381, a signed diversion will direct traffic towards Totnes on the A381, before joining the A385 towards Paignton and the A380 back towards Newton Abbot.
The route will operate in reverse for traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
Although the diversion is relatively lengthy, the council said equivalent A-road routes were necessary.
The latest closure comes amid wider roadworks across the town and surrounding area.
Motorists continue to face disruption from ongoing improvement works on the A382.
The new Whitehills Roundabout at Jetty Marsh opened to traffic in August, as part of Devon County Council's wider scheme.
But further closures between Forches Cross and Stover School have been introduced to allow road widening and realignment work to continue.
Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during the Wolborough Street closure.
