MORE than £1,200 had to be spent on specialist contractors to remove bags of asbestos illegally and dangerously dumped in Halcyon Car park by flytippers.

And with no-one coming forward with information as to who was responsible, Teignbridge’s Executive Member for Waste Management and Environmental Health Cllr Alistair Dewhirst has condemned those responsible and renewed the council’s appeal for help in tracking down the flytippers.

‘Responsible residents will have been horrified to learn about the dumping of this dangerous waste in a public car park in Newton Abbot and will join me in utterly condemning the thoughtlessness and selfishness of those involved.

‘At a time when all budgets are under pressure, the £1200 which we had to spend to ensure its safe collection and disposal means less money for other council activities which support local residents.

‘As the dumped asbestos was wrapped up in small packages, individuals or businesses which have had some removed from their premises recently should be able to recognise the packaging and advise the council as to who did the work.

‘I urge them to come forward and help stop this dangerous flytipping,’ said Cllr Dewhirst.

Cllr Dewhirst urged anyone with information not to remain silent but to contact the environmental health team on [email protected] or to call them on 01626 361101
