FIREFIGHTERS from Chagford and Moretonhampstead have joined eight other stations from across Devon to tackle a fire at the village hall Cheriton Bishop this afternoon, Thursday.

Fire Control has since confirmed the roof of the hall has been completely destroyed and the rest of the building has sustained smoke, heat and water damage.

A spokesperson said: ‘This was a fire involving a single storey village hall measuring approximately 10 metres by 30 metres.

‘The fire was involving the solar panels on the roof which spread throughout the remainder of the roof causing 100% damage, remainder of the building was damaged by heat, smoke and water.’

Three fire engines an aerial ladder platform and a supporting officer were sent shortly before 2pm.

Once on scene crews sent back an immediate assistance message of Make Pumps five – due to the roof being fully involved in fire which also involved a number of solar panels. Crews were at work using 2 Breathing Apparatus and 1 Hose Reel Jet.

Shortly after this another assistance message came in for Make Water Bowsers 1 to assist with water supply to the incident.

Shortly before 4pm they reported: ‘We are still on scene with eight fire engines numerous supporting appliances and supporting officers.

At 5pm Fire Control reported: ‘The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. There will be no further updates.’
