A MAJOR multi-agency rescue operation was launched after a young person became trapped between rocks at Hound Tor on Dartmoor.

Bovey Tracey Fire Station crews were mobilised on Tuesday, June 22, following reports of a person stuck beneath the rocks at the popular moorland beauty spot.

On arrival, firefighters carried out an assessment and found the child’s thigh had become wedged after she slipped while moving through a rocky tunnel beneath the tor.

Fire crews stabilised and reassured the young person while awaiting specialist assistance from the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team.

A coordinated response then followed involving the South Western Ambulance Service (SWAST), Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), Cave Rescue teams, Devon Air Ambulance and a specialist Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service officer.

The carefully managed rescue operation lasted more than three hours in hot and challenging conditions.

Teams worked together to safely free the young person, who was left with only minor bumps and scratches.

Following the rescue, the casualty was assessed by ambulance crews before posing for a photograph with members of the emergency teams involved.

Officials praised the operation as an excellent example of multi-agency collaboration leading to a successful outcome.
