► BATTLE OF BRITAIN SUNDAY
‘Today around us are the forces of oppression, of frustration and lawlessness, indifference, even cruelty and violence. These things did not dissolve when Germany surrendered, and the battle is still on,’ said Rev Alan Forde, speaking at a Battle of Britain service at St James’ Church last Sunday. ‘The enemy has changed his form of attack, and adopted new and subtle methods, but the dangers are just as real. “The Few” were now the men, women, boys and girls, who made a stand for the things of God. They had to be very vigilant, and above all, find a stronger and more lasting way to assure peace and safety.’
► BOMB SCARE
At 12.30 on Monday morning, an anonymous phone call was received by the police from a call box in Bitton Park Road, that a bomb had been planted on the pier, and was due to go off in half an hour. The fire services were informed and two appliances, under Station Officer Tom Radford, were rushed to the sea front. The pier was combed by police and firemen after the given time had elapsed, but nothing was found. It is believed that the hoax call was made by the same anonymous person with a Scots accent, who has been making calls in Torbay.
► CAR PARKS
The acute parking problem in Teignmouth was discussed at length at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held at the Royal Hotel last week. The decision of the Ministry not to make grants for multi-story or other car parks led Mr D Egerton Jones to remark that in the special circumstances that the town found itself, the Minister should be left in no doubt that a change of policy was due.
► INSCRIBED BATON
A black baton, about 2ft 6ins long, was found on the beach at Teignmouth about three months ago, and was handed in to the police station. It bears the inscription ‘Buckingham Palace investiture, 6th April 1943: Walter George Whincop.’ Although it must be of great sentimental value, it has not been claimed, and the police ask if anyone knows anything about the baton to contact them.
