► FEEDING BEACH WITH SAND

A special meeting of the Finance and General Purposes Committee was held at Bitton House last Friday, in connection with the harbour development scheme. Extra sand will have to be fed onto the main beach, because the natural circle of material that feeds the coastline will be interrupted when the long rubble wall is built at the estuary.

Professor Clarence Kidson, the Council’s coastal consultant from Aberystwyth University, reckoned about 16,000 cubic yards. Depending on the weather, the Eastcliff end of the beach could be starved of sand for between five and 20 years. Everyone seemed agreed on this, but the next problem was where was the extra sand coming from, and who was going to pay for it?

► ‘OUR ’ENERY’

The Teignmouth Boxing Club’s new headquarters at the old Lyceum Cinema, Somerset Place, will probably be opened by Henry Cooper, former British and Empire and European champion, as revealed by the Club chairman, Mr Fred Tooley. He had come to ask the Chamber of Commerce for aid in raising £1,500 to complete the restoration. In 15 months, the Club had raised £2,000 by his own fundraising system. The members had put in 3,500 manual working hours, equivalent to completing seven bungalows if they had been working for a building contractor.

► RETURNING SERVICEMEN

At the Urban Council’s Press conference, Mr Langston referred to a circular sent to local authorities by the Ministry, concerning the housing of service applicants returning to this country after overseas posting. The local council had said that any servicemen returning from service should be considered immediately for the allocation of housing accommodation.

► TV RECPTION

When Mr A E Vince, of 1, The Drive, Bishopsteignton, had purchased a new colour television set and the aerial to go with it, on one weekend he forgot to connect the aerial to the set, and to his amazement received a perfect picture from Beacon Hill. ‘The reception was better than with the aerial’.

► HALDON MOTOR CLUB

On Sunday November 19, Haldon Motor Club held their first production car trial of the season, at Livingshayes Farm, Silverton. In the morning, eight sections were attempted, varying from the long water splash to a section up a long rough lane, finishing with a very tight turn into a field. Mrs Gerry Smith was the only one to clear this. Two sections in an orchard proved virtually impossible, and after a sharp shower, they were abandoned.

The Club recently held the final round of the Coombe Cellars championship treasure hunt. It was organised by Dave Quantick, and started by Haldon lay-by, near the Golf Course. The route was defined by a mixture of spot heights, ordnance survey map references, clock navigation and straightforward directions. Clues were reasonably easy to spot; a notable exception was ‘A cure for indigestion’, the answer being Windout Farm, a sign which was only visible when crossing a ford near Mortonhampstead. Another puzzling one was ‘Trapp’s Gone’ which was a house named Edelweiss.
