A NEW car park has opened in Teignmouth, providing close to 20 additional spaces for residents, businesses and visitors in the town centre.

The new 19-space car park is located on George Street, on the former site of Swanson's Garage, which was demolished in 2020.

The RingGo payment system is expected to be activated within the next 10 days. Until then, motorists can pay by chip and PIN, contactless payment or cash.

The site forms part of wider regeneration plans for the Brunswick Street area, which was identified in the Teignbridge Local Plan 2013-2033 as a key regeneration opportunity for the town.

The former garage site had remained vacant while a number of options for its future were considered.

In 2022, the old fuel tanks were safely removed and the land was cleaned up ahead of its redevelopment.

It has now been transformed into a modern public car park, providing additional parking while bringing a previously vacant brownfield site back into use.

The project has also included the replacement of a historic 19th-century stone culvert, construction of a new boundary wall, a new road junction and footway, and improvements to surface water drainage.

A spokesperson for Teignbridge Council said: ‘We would like to thank local residents, businesses and our contractors for their patience, support and cooperation throughout the construction period. We look forward to welcoming users to the new facility’.

The new car park is now open and available for public use.
