LOCAL lads Jack Rodwell, Isaac Johnson and Sammy Mayhew became Teignmouth Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s (BSLSC) newest members of the lifeguard team this week.
All of the boys have been with the club for at least four years, and having completed a gruelling set of tests, are now qualified lifeguards, ready for action.
To pass, Jack, Isaac and Sammy first had fitness tests and got trained in emergency first aid and advanced CPR.
They then learned about water safety and observation skills before the ultimate test: two mock-up rescues of conscious and unconscious casualties. For the latter, they were required to deliver resuscitation techniques on a board, a couple of hundred metres out at sea.
A spokesperson for the club said: ‘Congratulations to our newly qualified surf lifeguards!
‘They have been members of the club for many years, coming up through Nipper and Youth training and look forward to working with the club and the RNLI to keep our beaches safe.’
