A MAN has been given a suspended jail sentence for attacking a police woman in Newton Abbot.

Tony John Hawkins, aged 30, of Scarborough Road, Torquay, had pleaded not guilty to assaulting PC Wright by beating her in her duty as an Emergency Worker.

He was found guilty by South and West Devon Magistrates' Court and he was sent to prison for six weeks, suspended for a year.

The court described it as an ‘offence so serious.’

He was ordered to pay £100 compensation and Crown Prosecution Service costs of £200.

Hawkins admitted he had breached a community order made previously by the court and was dealt with for a previous offence. He was sentenced to a further four weeks in prison, suspended for a year. He had been charged with driving Landrover Freelander while unfit to drive through drugs on April 22, 2020.
